🦷 On the day of the closing closing night event I went to my orthodontist to get my hardware put in for my #Invisalign. He told me it might be uncomfortable at first and I should wait till after the event, but I insisted. And then I was in pain. Here is my awesome orthodontist, Dr. Shapiro, his wife and their dog at the exhibit. The first artwork he looked at was of my teeth. I thought that was funny. In 2017, heartbroken over our times, I went on a tirade, reading poems and doing performance art all over NYC to release my anger. In that same year I saw Heide Hatry and Jane LeCroy perform their edit of The Masque of Anarchy by #PercyByssheShelley at La Mama. I was struck by the words and enjoyed their performance. So I invited them to perform it at Take Heed’s (first) closing night here a snippet. The full version will be available on ChannelELSTER via Youtube. This is one of my favorite spots in the exhibition. Bound up with so many memories, memorialized in a box, and on display. I originally purchased this mask and suit in 1995. I didn't see it as a form of protection, rather pieces I wanted to use in a creative way, some day. It was not until the beginning of 2016, convinced Trump would win the election, that I took out the mask and suit and used it for a photographic series, Warfare, and as a performance piece entitled, Fun Future? The mask and suit became the center of many of my performance pieces, video art, and protest art, all warning that we did not want “a lunatic having access to our nuclear codes”, and the dire direction we were heading down. . I was horrified at the current state of the world, but the audience was not taking any heed, rather finding the performances and artwork "cool," therefore missing the point. . After performing throughout 2017, I finally gave up and retired the mask and suit into a plexiglass box with the Fun Future? sign. And here it is. In its glory. . . The exhibition is not political, which is why I saved the details of this story until the end. Or maybe I was hoarding it.
