Indigenous Day, 2022

October 10, 2022

An offering of beauty on behalf of Indigenous People’s Day.
I put up a special tribute for Indigenous People’s Day on Monday, and then left it up as I continued to think on how Native American people have impacted the world, and also have personally impacted me with their kindness throughout the years.
It brought me back to one of the few times in my life that I was depressed. I went to Joshua Tree to meet my friend Mouchette. The actor Terrence Howard met me out there to be filmed in my film series.
I went for a ride on a tractor truck with a grounds worker, at our hotel, who was Native American. He recognized my pain. After, he sent me a pouch with good luck treasures in it. There was no way for him to benefit from the gesture. Just from him to me.
Meant a lot. Still does.
In this post I also included a dance to Amid the Beauty where Eimi Tanaku played piano and Mike Handelman played guitar during an evening Chief Perry of the Ramapough-Lenape tribe was supporting my cause.
Thank you.
I will continue to express my appreciation.

“Today I am thinking of all of the people in the world suffering from war.
9/11 specifically brings to mind the vulnerabilities we have
in America,
and how
we all must do our best to stand up to injustices
and push back on evil
so that it doesn’t flourish

DOUBLE PEACE, 1995

DAVID BOWIE (AS BABY GRACE) AND JENNIFER ELSTER

Photograph
48 x 50 in

Double Peace, David Bowie and Jennifer Elster, was on view at The Development gallery at 75 Leonard Street in Tribeca in a series of rotation window installations throughout the summer.

“When David and I first spoke on the phone about 1. Outside it was obvious the artistic boundaries between us were limitless. We went to deep, psychological places together to take the work further. We shared a mutual understanding through multiple mind sets and is why we seem so familiar with one another in the images of us together.” — Jennifer Elster

GET AWAY FROM ME, 2021

DAVID BOWIE AND JENNIFER ELSTER

Acrylic on Canvas
40 x 64 in

This painting is on a photograph of David Bowie who was transformed by Jennifer Elster, with her style and signature cut pieces, in the character of Ramona for the 1. Outside album artwork in 1995. With paint and words, Elster added to the image in 2021. The original photography from the 1. Outside album was photographed by Johns Scarisbrick at Click Studios, Corsham Street, Shoreditch London.

“The character of Ramona was a favorite of mine. The desperation. The need. Somehow David and I both understood those channels, intensely. Ramona was born from scattered insanity. Needed protection. It seemed fitting to bring her into another dimension with paint and words…as if an unfinished conversation.” — Jennifer Elster
